Treating your Diabetes

Insulin lowers blood glucose levels effectively. A variety of insulin preparations are available, which make it possible to use different insulin regimens. All of these regimens involve the administration of insulin by injection under the skin. There is presently no other effective way of delivering insulin, however, different injection devices are available to increase the convenience and precision of treatment with insulin.

Insulin administration regimens range from 1 or 2 injections to 4 or more injections of insulin per day. There are also small portable pumps that are pre-programmed to inject the insulin continuously. Your doctor will decide which treatment and regimen is best for you.

Everyone, including people with diabetes, should eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. It is strongly recommended that people with type 1 diabetes do not smoke. People with diabetes have a higher chance of developing health problems such as heart disease, poor circulation, high blood pressure, stroke, poor vision, damage to the kidneys and nerves. Smokers are encouraged to stop smoking immediately.

People with type 1 diabetes need regular medical check ups. They will also need to test their blood glucose regularly to make sure the level is normal and their insulin dose is appropriate.
