Rapid- and Short-Acting Insulin
Rapid-acting insulins
These are clear solutions containing a modified form of human insulin. The modification results in a rapid onset and a short duration of action. The timing of injection in relation to meals is therefore very important.
Rapid-acting insulin
Onset: 10-20 minutes
Peak: 1-3 hours
Duration: 3-5 hours
Short-acting insulins
These are clear solutions containing an insulin identical to that found in body. Like rapid-acting insulins they are also intended to be given before meals but the timing of this injection will differ from rapid-acting insulin. An injection should be followed by a meal or snack containing carbohydrates within 30 minutes.
Short-acting human insulin
Onset: 30 minutes
Peak: 2.5-5 hours
Duration: 8 hours
It is important to note that the duration and absorption times described above are only approximate. Absorption of insulin always depends on individual factors.
