Types of Insulins

The aim of insulin therapy is to provide insulin so that it will mimic the normal 'physiological' insulin levels in the body which are normally stable until a meal is eaten.  With each intake of food, the levels of insulin increase. Insulin treatment aims to reproduce these levels.

Different types of insulin preparations are distinguished by the insulins they contain as well as the speed at which the injected insulin is absorbed from the subcutaneoustissue into the blood (known as the onset of action) and by the time it takes for all the  injected insulin to be absorbed (known as the duration of action).
